The full soundtrack for the first Hobbit film, An Unexpected Journey, streamed free on the internet for a few days this week, but has now been taken down. I checked Empire Online’s widget for the soundtrack but it says that streaming is “no longer available.” Those who’ve had a chance to listen said that the widget only allowed them to stream and watch The Hobbit online, without the ability to skip to a particular track. If you just can’t wait, you can listen to Neil Finn’s "Song of the Lonely Mountain" on Rolling Stone online. This particular track borrows from the dark theme of the Misty Mountains song early in the movie and will be used in the end credits. I’ve only heard the Misty Mountains track on YouTube (which is deliciously brooding and ominous), but many commenter are saying that the whole thing sounds great. Howard Shore returned to compose for The Hobbit and spoke of his excitement in an old interview that is written on Watch The Hobbit Online:
“We’ve [Shore and Jackson] talked about making these movies [The Hobbit] for many years, at least since 2002… It looks like finally it’s going to be happening. I’ll be working on it for the next three years — it’s going to consume a lot of my time and work now.”
Shore composed about 11 hours of music for the original LOTR films, which he regards as his best work and you can sample all this on Watch The Hobbit Online.
“Everything I knew about composing, orchestrating,
conducting—everything I had learned about music was in it.”
No question about it—the LOTR score is not only critically-acclaimed, but beloved. It has been performed hundreds of times by different orchestras all over the world. Themes from the LOTR soundtrack return to The Hobbit, with new themes for the new characters. The soundtrack will be released on 11 December, but you can already pre-order it on Amazon.
